Biography

Jeannette Lee

Praised for her “warm mezzo tone” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) and “rare stillness and depth” (Interlude), Hong Kong-born Jeannette Lee is a dynamic concert soloist, teaching artist, and vocal advocate with an international profile.

The 2025–26 season highlights Jeannette’s versatility, with high-profile choral debuts at the Aspen Music Festival and with the New York Philharmonic under Dame Jane Glover in collaboration with Music of the Baroque. She also makes first appearances with Apollo’s Fire and the William Ferris Chorale. On the operatic stage, she will be heard as Durra in Thompson Street Opera’s The People vs. American Cheese and tours as Doctor Dulcamara in The Elixir of Love with Opera for the Young. She also sings the alto solo in Bach’s St. John Passion at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. This past summer, Jeannette joined Teatro Nuovo as a Resident Artist, covering Teresa in La sonnambula and performing in the ensemble of Macbeth.

Jeannette’s concert repertoire includes solo performances in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus, Britten’s Cantata Academica, Monteverdi’s Marienvespers, and Golijov’s Oceana. She has also collaborated with TwoSet Violin on their inaugural world tour alongside the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra.

On the operatic stage, Jeannette has portrayed roles including Cherubino and Annio in Mozart operas, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, and L’enfant in The Child and the Enchantments, and created roles in world premieres such as HER | alive.un.dead, Tamale Dumpling, and In the House of Serenity.

A prizewinner in competitions, Jeannette was Runner‑Up in the 2025 Colorado Bach Ensemble Young Artist Awards and the 2023 William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition, and received the 2022 Hilda Harris Mezzo‑Soprano Prize at the George Shirley Vocal Competition. Jeannette balances performance excellence with community commitment. She is currently a Teaching Artist at Lyric Opera of Chicago. As President of the Asian Opera Alliance, she facilitates their peer mentorship program and other advocacy initiatives aimed at advancing equity and representation within the operatic field.
