Biography

Jennifer Carter

Soprano Jennifer Carter has been praised as “a wonderfully honest and communicative performer,” (OPERA PROGRAMS BERLIN) who has “a gloriously resonant, expressive soprano voice” (CLAUDIA FRIEDLANDER, WEILL MUSIC INSTITUTE); and a “consummate singing actor” (BARZCABLOG) who can “embody these demanding roles with both dramatic intensity and vocal ease.” (CLAUDIA FRIEDLANDER, WEILL MUSIC INSTITUTE)

In spring 2023, Ms. Carter will appear in the title role Suor Angelica in Waterloo, the inaugural production of Grand River Opera.  Then she will return to Vermont to sing 5.te Magd (Elektra) and Kaiserin (Die Frau ohne Schatten) in a series of Strauss Concerts with TUNDI Productions.  In August she will once again join TUNDI’s Wagner in Vermont Festival, reprising Ortlinde (Die Walküre), covering Forest bird in Siegfried, and participating in their Practicum program for dramatic voices.

In August 2022, Ms. Carter jumped in as Ortlinde (Die Walküre), having originally been the cover, for Tundi Productions’ Wagner in Vermont Festival.  She also participated in their Practicum program, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. Earlier in 2022 she was also awarded a Professional Development Grant by the Canada Council of the Arts, to assist her move into dramatic soprano repertoire.

In Toronto, she appeared onstage in March 2022 as 4.te Magd (Elektra) with Powerhouse Opera.   She also covered Chrysothemis for this production, having prepared it as a role study with Dramatic Voices Program Berlin in 2021.

In 2020, she participated as both Rheinmaiden and Valkyrie in the joint Toronto production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle by Opera by Request and Berlin Opera Gruppe, singing Wellgunde (Das Rheingold, Götterdämmerung) and Waltraute (Die Walküre). Previously she has sung both Wellgunde and Woglinde (Das Rheingold) with Dramatic Voices Program Berlin and Canadian Operatic Arts Academy.

Other roles include Ariadne in a staged excerpt from Ariadne auf Naxos, and La badessa (Suor Angelica) with Opera Susquehanna; Violetta (La Traviata) with Opera Oshawa and Opera by Request; Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) with Capital City Opera and Opera Vi/Vace; Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte) with Premiere Productions and Oshawa Opera; and Mimì (La bohème) with the Colours of Music Festival in Barrie, and Opera by Request, Toronto.  Opera Kitchener featured her as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte). Of her Violetta with Opera by Request, Leslie Barzca, said, “[she] gave scene the weight of real tragedy.”

Jennifer has been featured in recital on the concert series at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, and the Encore! Professionals recital series at Brock University (St. Catharines).  She was the soprano soloist for Messiah with Vocal Horizons Chamber Choir. She also sang the world premiere of “The Song of Ruth” by Niagara Region composer Erik Gero.

Ms. Carter holds dual Canadian-British citizenship, and currently resides in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. She maintains an independent studio, teaching voice to amateur and pre-professional singers; and directs the K-W Singers community choir.
