Toronto-based mezzo-soprano Jessica Lyublinsky has had a passion for music from a young age. Now, at 22 years old, she has achieved success in various competitions and has been praised by industry professionals for the depth of her voice, dramatic timbre, and extensive vocal range. Jessica has secured several scholarships and grants at various festivals and competitions and has already made international debuts.
Jessica completed her Bachelor of Music degree in classical voice at The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music where she was the recipient of the Bill and Janet L'Heureux full-tuition scholarships, as well as the David and Shelagh Wilson full-tuition scholarship, and the Hazel Workman Kettley scholarship. Jessica studied under Adrianne Pieczonka, the vocal chair of the GGS opera program, and coached with répétiteur Rachael Kerr and David Eliakis. In the 2023/24 season, Jessica and her piano-voice duo partner, Jonathan Alter, made their in Koerner Hall debut as the Duo Tikvah (Hope), in the GGS Chamber Competition finals, earning second place in the duo category. In spring 2024, Jessica sang the role of Mère Jeanne de l’Enfant Jésus in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites under the baton of Montreal based conductor, Nicolas Ellis. At GGS, Jessica had the opportunity to perform in donor events, as well as solo and chamber recitals, such as the Lieder Abend 2023 (directed by Mia Bach), Baroque Historical Performance seminars, and several French Mélodie art song concerts in Mazzoleni Hall and Temerty Theater. At GGS, Jessica worked with Canadian and international artists in masterclasses, including Ema Nikolovska, Liz Upchurch, Russell Braun, Lynne Dawson, Warren Jones and Adrianne Pieczonka, to name a few.
In 2023, Jessica marked her European debut with a standout performance as La Zia Principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica at the Saluzzo Opera Academy (SOA), conducted by Kevin Class. Her invitation to SOA included a full scholarship and living stipend, as a professional performer. Since 2018, Jessica has been a student of Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices (IYDV). In 2019, at sixteen, Jessica made philharmonic debut performing alongside the IYDV and American Wagner Project singers in the “Ride of the Valkyries” scene as Schwertleite from Wagner’s Die Walküre under the baton of Laura Jackson with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. Jessica has since performed Waltraute in the same scene at IYDV in 2024. At IYDV, Jessica has performed in concerts and masterclasses, working with industry professionals such as Dolora Zajick, Luana DeVol, Beatrice Benzi, Tom Muraco, Stefano Baldasseroni, and Yelena Kurdina. She will return to IYDV for an eighth consecutive year in July 2025.
Jessica has displayed her versatility in various professional engagements, including the North American premiere of Henekh Kon’s Yiddish opera Bas Sheve at the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto (2022); three seasons with the Mandel Philharmonic, where she serves as the alto choir lead and rehearsal soloist in piano and orchestra rehearsals (notably the alto solo for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9); and numerous performances with the Toronto Korean Canadian Choir (TKCC) under conductor and pianist Isaac Seo. Most recently, she performed with the TKCC in their Asian Heritage Month performance for the City of Toronto and in the Jewish Voices in Music fundraising concert, where she showcased music with poetry by Hannah Szenes as part of Duo Tikvah and performed Schoenberg’s early works as a soloist. Jessica is the 2024 recipient of the Ben Steinberg Legacy Grant, sharing the winning title with her duo partner, Jonathan Alter. Jonathan and Jessica with be preforming together in late March at Temple Sinai, in collaboration with the synagogue musicians and cantor. Jessica will be performing Bellini, Massenet, Verdi alongside compositoins by Charles Osborne and other Canadian and Jewish composers.
Jessica is the 2024 recipient of the Ben Steinberg Legacy Grant, sharing the winning title with her duo partner, Jonathan Alter. Jonathan and Jessica with be preforming together in late March at Temple Sinai, in collaboration with the synagogue musicians and cantor. Jessica will be performing Bellini, Massenet and Verdi alongside compositoins by Charles Osborne and other Canadian and Jewish composers. Upcoming ensemble performances include solo appearances with the TKCC and Seohan Orchestra (excerpts of Verdi’s Requiem and Karl Jenkins' Joy to The World Arrangement), the Mandel Philharmonic’s Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Holiday Concert (alto chorus), the Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at GGS, and The Future Voices of Opera at the Reno Artown Festival in Nevada as a student at IYDV.
Jessica studies with Dolora Zajick, Luana DeVol and coaches with Rachael Kerr and Brahm Goldhamer.
Jessica is in two piano-voice duos, Duo Tikvah with pianist Jonathan Alter; and the Duo "Just Two spoonful's of Sugar and a Little Drop of Cyanide" with pianist Abraham Alinea.
Aside from opera, Jessica is a passionate writer and loves to collaborate with composers, and is an avid cook.
Jessica enjoys spending time with her three cats, reading classical and all sorts of literature, and learning music by lesser known composers while melding her diverse heritage into her music, poetry and art creation. She hopes to one day cultivate a recital of non-traditional language songs, folk songs, and more.
Jessica speaks Russian and English, fluently.
