Johanna Mergener
(They/Them) Operatic Stage Director

My directing philosophy centers around play. Playing is crucial to producing authentic art and allows us to find our own voices within the stories we tell. My love for playful art is inspired by my experience as a lindy hop dancer, by the improvisation and conversation in jazz music, and by the boldness of surrealist art. Ultimately, my goal is to bring these forms of play into the world of opera in order to tell colorful, daring stories.
