John Riesen

Upcoming John will perform as Younger Thomson in Glory Denied with Knoxville Opera (Sept) and Opera Roanoke (Feb 2023), and as Camille in the Merry Widow with Knoxville Opera (Nov). He will also be making his debut with Las Vegas Opera in his return to Evan L. Snyder's murder-mystery opera A Capacity for Evil (Jan 2023) before making his role debut as the Duke of Mantua with Intermountain Bozeman's production of Verdi's Rigoletto (May 2023). John will also be seen in concert for the Patriot Awards Gala in Knoxville, Christmas Concert in Columbus, OH, and in Saugatuck, MI among others. In the 2021/2022 season, John returned to signature roles including Frederic in Pirates of Penzance with Utah Opera, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with On Site Opera, Chris in the world-premiere of Favorite Son by GRAMMY award winning song-writer Marcus Hummon with Nashville Opera, as well as performing in concerts around the United States.

Riesen’s growing career boasts a variety of roles in which he excels and includes significant work in Opera, Musical Theater, studio recording, voice over and concert. His most notable roles include Frederic in Pirates of Penzance, Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore, Candide in Candide, Tony in West Side Story, Romeo in Romeo et Juliette, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Alfredo in La Traviata, Prince Charmant in Cendrillon and Younger Thompson in Glory Denied. Recently John was seen in his Lincoln Center debut as the voice of Tony in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite as well as the tenor soloist in Stravinsky's Les Noces with the New York City Ballet, and tenor soloist in Rachmaninoff's Vespers with the NY Oratorio Society. He will be making his Carnegie Hall Debut as Tenor Soloist in the Messiah December 2021. Outside of the realm of stage performance John has released two studio recording albums, “What You’d Call a Dream” (2019) featuring operatic, musical theater, and new works close to John’s heart and “Christmas at Home” (2020) featuring holiday favorites. His recent single release of “You’re the Best” has been called “elegant and captivating as every note is crisp, full, and truly heartfelt.” (Straight Bread Magazine)
