Spungin holds a Master's of Voice and Opera from McGill University, is a graduate of Calgary Opera's Emerging Artist Program, and is currently a member of the Ensemble Stuido at the Canadian Opera Company.
Jonah Spungin is a Canadian baritone with "tremendous placement of voice and timbre" (Le Devoir). He's most recently been heard as Dancaïre (Carmen), Marquis d'Obigny (La Traviata) and Marco (Gianni Schicchi) with the Canadian Opera Company where he is a member of the Ensemble Studio. Previously, he sang many roles with Calgary Opera, such as Marullo (Rigoletto), Mike Groom (Everest), King Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors), and Athenodorus the Philosopher in the world premiere of Veronika Krausas's Ghost Opera. He also sang the role of Jan Nyman in the Scandinavian premiere of Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves.
Equally at home on the concert stage, Jonah has appeared as a soloist with many ensembles, including the Calgary Philharmonic, the COC Orchestra, the Ottawa Choral Society, and Compagnie Baroque Montréal, in such repertoire as Mendelssohn's Elijah, Fauré's Requiem, Zelenka's Missa Votiva, and Handel's Messiah.
Jonah has been second prize winner of the OCS New Discoveries Competition, a quarterfinalist in the Concours Musical International de Montréal, finalist in the Talent Gala competition at Opéra de Montréal, finalist in the COC Centre Stage Competition, and recipient of the prestigious Schulich Scholarship at McGill University, where he pursued his Master's in Voice and Opera.
