Jonathan Boyd a native of Corning, New York consistently performs to great acclaim. Opera News hailed his Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette as “…physically and vocally suited for the role, acting with assurance and singing with an easy lyricism.” Mr. Boyd opened his 2019 season in the role of Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata with Portland Opera and then repeated the role with Icelandic Opera in Reykjavik, Iceland and Deutsche Oper Am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Germany. Mr. Boyd’s 2020 season began in the role of Alfredo with Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole and will continue with his debut with Carmel Bach festival as the tenor soloist in Rossini’s Stabat Mater. The spring of 2021 will hear Mr. Boyd in his debut with Opéra de Tours in the role of the Electrician Powder Her Face by Thomas Adès. Noted international engagements include his role debut of Lensky in Eugene Onegin marking his company debut with Opéra de Reims and a return to Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole. In recent seasons Mr. Boyd has been heard in the title role Werther in his company debut with Scottish Opera and in the same role for a live HD stream broadcast from Teatro Colón in Argentina. Mr. Boyd’s company debuts with Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Toulon and Teatro Colón where all in the role of Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His role debut of Peter Quint in Turn of the Screw was with Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. In a company début with Opera di Firenze Maggio Musicale, he was heard in the role of Le Prince in L’amour des trois oranges. For his role and company debut with Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole, he was heard as Anatol in Vanessa. Malta’s National Theater and Festival Lyrique-en-mer de Belle Île were company debuts for his Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. And Mr. Boyd’s company debuts with Théâtre de l’Athénée and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France were in one of his signature roles of Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress. Mr Boyd’s success as Alfredo in La Traviata with Akouna, Opéra en Plein Air, was heard by thousands in the outdoor performance at Le Sénat en Parc Luxemburg of Paris. Noted North American engagements from recent seasons include the title role Faust with Portland Opera. Mr. Boyd’s triumph as Narraboth in Pittsburgh Opera’s production of Strauss’ Salome came following his successful company debut in the role of Heurtebise in Orphée by Philip Glass. Other recent company debuts included Seattle Opera as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Atlanta Opera in the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and in the title role of Faust with Austin Lyric Opera. Noted contemporary works include the role of Greenhorn in Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick in his San Diego Opera debut, the Grammy Award winning opera Elmer Gantry in the role of Frank Shallard in Florentine Opera’s production and Michigan Opera Theatre’s world premiere of Margaret Garner as George Hancock. Years previous of those ground breaking operas, Mr. Boyd was heard in New York City Opera’s productions of Mother of Us All and Central Park; the role of Sam in Susannah with Opéra de Montreal; and the role of Sam in Street Scene with Portland Opera where he returned to sing the title role of Candide. Composer Lee Hoiby personally chose Mr. Boyd to create the role of Romeo in his opera Romeo and Juliet, subsequently Mr. Boyd had the honor of performing selections of it with New York City Opera, Stamford Symphony in Connecticut, and the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. The full work has yet to be produced. Mr. Boyd’s concert appearances have included Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Opéra de Rouen Haute- Normandie, Britten’s War Requiem for Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Fort Worth Symphony, Haydn’s Creation with the Choral Arts Society at the Kennedy Center, Mozart’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with the Choral Arts Society in Washington D.C., Mozart’s Solemn Vespers at Carnegie Hall and with Maestro Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque Handel’s Messiah. With I Musici de Montréal Mr. Boyd was heard in Finzi’s Dies Natalis and Britten’s Les Illuminations. Mr. Boyd performed the role of Mozart in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri. with Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in a live TV broadcast with Virginia Symphony.
