Jonathan Charles Tay

Singaporean tenor Jonathan Charles Tay is one of the leading opera singers to emerge from his home country in this generation. His clear lyric tone and commitment to text and drama have contributed to his increasing presence on opera and concert stages. Jonathan is also co-founder and co-artistic director of Singaporean Opera Company, The Opera People. Jonathan and The Opera People started their 2019-2020 season with Jonathan in the title role as Zemlimsky’s Der Zwerg, in a new sold-out production, Dwarf, that was performed in partnership with the Musicians Initiative Orchestra. Jonathan also featured in Singapore Lyric Opera’s Carmen as Don José, and then as Jaquino in Beethoven’s Fidelio for the Arts House’s Light to Night Festival with TOP. Jonathan also featured in Dr Chen Zhangyi’s recording of his short operas, reprising the role of the Father in Kopi for One, a role he premiered and helped create in its 2018 premiere. Jonathan also worked with composer John Sharpley on the revision of his opera Fences of the Heart in a showcase at the Esplanade. Other highlights include appearances with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, featuring as a soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasie and in SSO’s Mother’s Day Concert. An exciting 2020-2021 season ahead with The Opera People include digital concerts for Zaobao, The Straits Times, The Esplanade Beautiful Sunday, The Esplanade Voices Festival, and their own Kopi & Song recital series. Jonathan will play the title role in The Opera People's film adaptation of Mozart's Idomeneo, in the first opera film produced in Singapore.
