(He/Him) From San Diego, California, Jonathan Lin is a award winning cellist, having won competitions across the United States. Jonathan is currently USC's Thornton School of Music where he currently studies with Prof. Andrew Shulman. He is also currently the principal cellist of the California Young Artists Symphony. Past educational institutions attended include an MM from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Prof. Philippe Muller and an BM from University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music where he studied with Dr. William Grubb

Biography

Jonathan Lin

From San Diego, California, Jonathan Lin has been playing cello since the age of nine. Jonathan graduated with a bachelor's degree in cello performance under the tutelage of Dr. William Grubb in 2018 and a Masters of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music with Prof. Philippe Muller in 2020. Jonathan is currently attending University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music where he currently studies with Prof. Andrew Shulman. During Covid, Jonathan had the pleasure to also study with Robert Demaine and Ronald Leonard. Previous teachers also include Joon Sung Jun, Bing Yan, Chia-Ling Chien, Yao Zhao. He has played in master classes with Tom Landschoot, Mihai Tetel, Yehuda Hanani, Adriana Contino, Brooklyn Rider Quartet, Robert Demaine, Johannes Moser, and Hans Jorgen Jensen. Teachers he has studied with have included Timothy Eddy, Amit Peled, Michel Strauss, Peter Stumpf, John Walz, Alan Rafferty. He has been coached in chamber music by members of the American String Quartet, Ariel String Quartet, Borromeo String Quartet, Ko Iwasaki, Richard Slavich, Yehuda Hanani, Great Wall String Quartet, Shanghai Quartet, Yura Lee and many others. Jonathan has had the pleasure to collaborate with the likes of Leonard Slatkin, Paul Coletti, Robert Demaine, and Zedd. Music festivals attended include the Idyllwild Summer Music Festival, Great Wall International Music Academy, Montecito International Music Festival, Catskill High Peaks Festival, Cincinnati Young Artists Chamber Music Festival, Bravo International Music Academy, Madeline Island Chamber Music, Heifetz International Music Institute, Josef Gingold Chamber Music Festival, and Festival MusicAlp, Orford Music Academy and Domaine Forget. Jonathan has been a prize winner for many competitions, most notably he was a finalist for the YMF Debut Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2015, 2nd Prize winner of the Montecito International Music Festival's Pre-College Competition in 2014, 2nd Prize winner of the CCM Undergraduate Instrumental (Baur) Competition in 2016, Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego Competition Scholarship Winner(2017, 2021), 2nd Prize(Strings Division) Winner of San Diego's Music Scholarship Council Competition in 2021, and Best Contemporary Piece Performance prize in the 2022 La Jolla Young Artist Competition. Jonathan is also the 2018 CCM's Werner Scholarship Recipient. Being the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra's principal cellist for two years, he performed in the Side-By-Side with the San Diego Symphony in 2013 and 2014, while being the principal cellist in 2014 for the Side-By-Side with the San Diego Symphony orchestra. he was also a member of the Music For All's Honor Orchestra of America in 2014. Jonathan is currently a substitute cellist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and is also currently the principal cellist of the California Young Arrtists Symphony.
