New York City born tenor, Jonathan Winell, continues to make his mark on the international stage. During the 2020-21 season at Theater Magdeburg, he will be Il Duca di Mantova in the premiere of Rigoletto, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette and Fenton in the premiere of Falstaff. In the 2019-20 Theater Magdeburg season, he will be Pang in Turandot, Fatty in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny and Roméo/Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette...all premieres. During the summer of 2019, Mr. Winell reprised the role of Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. John Allison, Editor of Opera Magazine said: "...tenorial honours were taken by Jonathan Winell's sweet-toned Pedrillo, possessed of more heft than many Pedrillos." In the 2018-19 season at Theater Magdeburg, he was Rodolfo in La Bohème, Ernesto in the premiere of Don Pasquale, Casio in the premiere of Otello, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Caramello in Eine Nacht in Venedig (Neufassung Korngold/Marischka) and Narraboth in Salome. In 2018, he also performed the roles of Steuermann in Der Fliegende Holländer at Landes Theater in Detmold, Germany, and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Staatsoper Berlin Unter den Linden. For his second season at Theater Magdeburg, he was Count Boni in Die Csárdásfürstin, Caramello in the premiere of Eine Nacht in Venedig (Neufassung Korngold/Marischka), the Electrician in the premiere of Powder Her Face and Narraboth in the premiere of Salome. Irene Constantin of Volksstimme said, "Jonathan Winell, as Narraboth, drowned out the orchestra with his heroic tenor voice." Also in 2018, Mr. Winell was a soloist in the Tenth Anniversary celebration of the Opernstudio, Staatsoper Berlin Unter den Linden; the Bel Canto Gala Concerts, Braunschweig Theater; Mendelssohn's Elijah, Magdeburg Cathedral; the National Music Festival, Chestertown, MD; and Mozart's Requiem, Chestertown, MD. During the summer of 2017, he performed the role of Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. During his first season, 2016-17, at Theater Magdeburg, he sang Bobinet & Jean Frick in Pariser Leben, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Steuermann in the premiere of Der Fliegende Holländer and Fenton in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor. In the summer of 2016, he sang the roles of Un Araldo and Il Re Gonzaga in Amleto at the Bregenz Festival. Mr. Winell was the Second Prize Winner of the 2015 Leyla Gencer Voice Competition in Istanbul. Alexandra Ivanoff for Today's Zaman said, "...his touching version of "Che gelida manina" was the convergence of dramatic sincerity and vocal brilliance." During the 2015-16 season, he was with Theater Regensburg, singing the roles of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, among others. For two seasons he was engaged with the Internationales Opernstudio at the Staatsoper Berlin Unter den Linden. During the 2014-2015 season, he performed in the premieres of Parsifal, 4. Knappe, with Daniel Barenboim conducting; Ariadne auf Naxos, Brighella; and Tarquin, Kanzler; as well as in Die Zauberflöte, Erster Priester & Erster Geharnischter, and Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, Fatty. His roles in the 2013-2014 season included: Prinz, Wolf Ferrari's Aschenputtel; Erster Priester & Erster Geharnischter, Die Zauberflöte; Der Vierte Jude, Salome with Zubin Mehta conducting; Don Curzio, Le Nozze di Figaro; Der Bogenschützen, Simon Boccanegra; and the Lawyer, Punch and Judy. In 2014, he was a soloist at the Neue Stimmen Konzert in Gütersloh, Germany, and the Lied Concert, Young Opera Singers Session in Moscow. During the summer of 2013, Mr. Winell was a member of The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singers Program where he performed Giuseppe in La Traviata and Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro. Earlier in 2013, he was Cleón in The Reformed Drunkard with The Little Opera Theatre of NY. He made his Lincoln Center debut in early 2012, at Avery Fisher Hall as Baroncelli in Rienzi with the Opera Orchestra of New York, under the baton of Eve Queler. NY Times chief music critic, Anthony Tommasini said, "young artist, Jonathan Winell, made a strong contribution in the role of Baroncelli." Other roles he has performed are: Lord Percy, Anna Bolena; Nadir, Les Pêcheurs de Perles; Camille, The Merry Widow; Léon, Signor Deluso; and Le Journaliste, Mamelles de Tirésias. He was also a soloist for Verdi's Messa di Requiem and Handel's Messiah with the Annapolis Chorale & Chamber Orchestra, J. Ernest Green, Conductor, at Maryland Hall. In 2014, he was a semi-finalist in the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in Helsinki. He was an Eastern Region Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2011 and has placed multiple times in competitions, among them: Gerda Lissner, Giulio Gari, Licia Albanese-Puccini, Career Bridges, and Il Comitato Amici del Logiatto in La Spezia. Mr. Winell is a graduate of The Hartt School and was an Artist in Residence at the Academy of Vocal Arts. He spent three summers in Florence, studying Italian at La Scuola Leonardo da Vinci and while there, attended the Florence Voice Seminar and the Bel Canto Institute. He has worked with a number of great conductors, among them Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Sebastian Weigle, Leo Hussain, Wayne Marshall, Christopher Moulds, Eve Queler, John Nelson and John Baril. He has also worked with many well-known coaches, including Jane Klaviter, Bob Morrison and Margaret Singer.
