Josaphat is a Mexican-American tenor based out of Boston, Massachusetts.
1st generation Latinx tenor Josaphat Contreras is a native of Alief, Houston, Texas.
Josaphat’s previous roles include, Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Orpheus (Orpheus in the Underworld) and King Kaspar (Amahl and the night visitors).
Josaphat has been a soloist for Voices21C, Eureka Ensemble, Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, Opera NexGen, The New England Conservatory of Music Opera Department, Cape Cod Chorale, NEMPAC Opera Project, Choral Art Society of the South Shore, Rumbarocco AfroLatin Baroque Ensemble, and The New England Conservatory of Music Liederabend series. Josaphat has worked with companies such as Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Maine, Teatro Nuovo, and the New York Philharmonic.
Josaphat has been a featured soloist in works such as Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem, Bruckner’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass in G, Handel’s El Mesías - A Spanish translation of Messiah, and Saint-Saëns Christmas oratorio.
In January 2022, Josaphat made his Carnegie Hall debut as a featured singer in the Vincerò Academy Gala Concert at Weill Recital Hall.

Josaphat completed his master’s degree program in Voice Pedagogy where he was a student of Michael Meraw at The New England Conservatory of Music and whose research encompasses mariachi repertoire and mariachi singing. Josaphat was voted by his peers and faculty as the Class of 2022 Commencement speaker at The New England Conservatory of Music. Josaphat has presented his research at NPR - Illinois in conjunction with the University of Illinois – Springfield, Arizona State University, and The New England Conservatory of Music.
When Josaphat is not performing, he enjoys spending time with his partner, Amanda Contreras and their two dogs, Rufus and Delilah.
