American-Greek baritone Joseph Calzada is a student at the IU Jacobs School of Music studying under Timothy Noble. Mr. Calzada joins IU Opera Theater for their 2021-2022 season in their productions of Falstaff and La Rondine. He has displayed roles ranging from Belcore in L’elisir D’amore, Eugene Onegin in Eugene Onegin, to Fiorello in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Mr. Calzada's 2021-2022 season includes: Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni) with the Vienna Summer Music Festival, Schaunard (La Bohème) with the Greek Opera Studio, and Il Frate (Don Carlo) Rodrigo/Cover (Don Carlo) with the Festival of the Aegean. In the 2019 season, he joined the Greek Opera Studio where he performed throughout the island of Syros, Greece and Athens. While there, he made his professional debut with the Festival of the Aegean singing Ein Lakai and covering Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos. Mr. Calzada has performed with companies such as Festival of the Aegean, Savannah Opera, Music on Site, Inc., IU Opera Theater, Russian Opera Workshop, and Harrower Summer Opera Workshop. His role credits include: Eugene Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Belcore (L’elisir D’amore), Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Ein Lakai (Ariadne auf Naxos), Fiorello (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Don Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Marco (Gianni Schicchi), Balthazar (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Businessman (The Little Prince), and Alidoro (La Cenerentola). In recent seasons, he has performed in IU Opera Theater’s productions of Dialogues of the Carmelites, L’elisir D’amore, Parsifal, La Traviata, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and La Bohème. Mr. Calzada was a Second-prize winner for the VII Odin International Music Online Competition 2021, and a Second-prize winner of the 2019 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition for undergraduates.
