Multi-award-winning young Canadian tenor Josh Lovell, whose voice has been described by the Chicago Classical Review as “a consistent cause for joy,” is an ensemble member with the Wiener Staatsoper. His roles there include Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Lurcanio (Ariodante), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Don Ramiro (La cenerentola), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Naraboth (Salome), and Noboru (Das verratene Meer).
Multi-award-winning young Canadian tenor Josh Lovell (Grand prize and Opera prize in’s-Hertogenbosch International Vocal Competition, second place in the Dallas Opera Guild Competition, third place in the Marcello Giordani Foundation Vocal Competition, and semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Audition) hails from Victoria, British Columbia. He studied at the University of Victoria and University of Michigan, and completed his young artist training with the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.He has participated in the Merola Opera Program, the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project, and the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme. Most recently,he has performed Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at the Bolshoi Theater, Mercury (Platée) at Des Moines Metro Opera, and Don Ramiro (La cenerentola) at the New Generation Festival in Florence. His current opera engagements include Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) at Pacific Opera Victoria. Josh Lovell is also an avid concert singer, and recently sang Mozart's Requiem with the Vancouver Symphony and Handel's Messiah with the Victoria Symphony. This season, he will make his recital debut at the Musikverein. Since the 2019/2020 season, he has been an ensemble member at Vienna State Opera.
