Biography

Ju Young Yi

Originally from California and raised in New York, clarinetist Ju Young Yi is a clarinetist in the premier music organization of the United States Army: The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" Concert Band. Yi recieved her Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance & Arts Leadership Program Certificate in 2023 at the Eastman School of Music, under the tutelage of Michael Wayne.

Prior to Eastman, Yi attended the Manhattan School of Music Precollege on full scholarship. Her accomplishments include first prize at the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York Concerto Competition, New York Artists International Competition, and New York International Music Concours, second prize at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Chamber Music Competition, and a semifinalist in the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Program. Yi has also been featured on NYC’s Classical Music radio station: WQXR Young Artists Showcase, with her precollege chamber group and orchestra. In addition, she was the recipient of the D. Stanley Hasty Memorial Scholarship at the Eastman School of Music. During her time at Eastman, Yi received the Verdehr Trio Chamber Music Award, where she and her trio members curated a recital, performing pieces commissioned by the Verdehr Trio.

Yi has been a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar in 2020 and 2022. She was also a substitute clarinetist at the New World Symphony. In addition, she has been a participant at the Maine Chamber Music Seminar from 2021-2022, working closely with musicians such as the Akropolis Reed Quintet and Claire Chase. Yi has also been the clarinet fellow of the 2023 season of the Bowdoin International Music Festival. Yi has participated in masterclasses with renowned clarinetists such as Ricardo Morales, Anthony McGill, Alan Kay, Afendi Yusuf, and David Howard.

An advocate for the arts, Ju Young recieved her Arts Leadership Program Certificate at the Eastman School of Music and served on the 2023 Executive Board of Sigma Alpha Iota, Sigma Theta Chapter as the Editor.
