Biography

Julia Holoman

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Julia Holoman is a senior Kenan Music Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is pursing her Bachelor's of Music degree in classical voice performance studying with Dr. Jeanne Fischer. Julia was selected as a national finalist for the National Association for Teachers of Singing in 2022, following a first place win at the Mid-Atlantic Regional level of NATS the previous year. Working with Dr. Marc Callahan in UNC's opera workshop, Julia has performed the roles of Nerone in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea and Humility in Hildegard's Ordo Virtutum over the course of the past academic year. An avid performer, Julia has made numerous appearances singing with the Triangle Wind Ensemble and the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, both under the direction of Dr. Evan Feldman. Julia has also studied conducting under Dr. Feldman and led TWE in a performance of Copland's Old American Songs for the Cary Arts Festival 2022, both singing and conducting two selections. Additional recent projects include composer commissioned pieces for mezzo soprano, clarinet, and string quartet under a co-written grant entitled "Intimate Distance" with Matthew Svec through

ArtsEverywhere UNC. This project explored the challenges that musicians faced during the pandemic and presented them as a central aspect to a space-oriented performance. Julia was selected as a Studio Artist for Aspen Music Festival's 2022 Full Summer Session where she engaged in operatic scenes, composer collaboration projects, and chorus work. Julia is also a 2022 Honors Carolina Robinson Fellow for her research project taking place during her time in Aspen Colorado about the history of zwichenfach singers. Her research revolves around interviews with the renowned Aspen faculty members and a case study of the women who sang roles that are in her repertoire, with a specific emphasis on the original singers for whom the roles were written. For Julia's final performance at UNC, she will be portraying Hansel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel under the direction of Dr. Lori Hicks. Julia will be attending The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University this fall to obtain her Master's degree under the tutelage of Dr. Nova Thomas.
