Junwen Liang

Hailed as "captivating" by Stroll Magazine, Dr. Junwen Liang, a native of Nanning/China, began his piano studies at the age of 9 and made his solo debut at the age of 13. In most recent years, Junwen has been performing in many recital series across the United States, in venues including Cohen Family Studio Theater, Robert J, Werner Recital Hall (Cincinnati), Indian Wells Theater (Palm Dessert), Everson Museum Auditorium (Syracuse), DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York); and Academy of Music at Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (Philadelphia). Additionally, Junwen has been featured as a soloist with Central Texas Philharmonic, Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra, and Ithaca College Symphonic Orchestra. His performance of Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3 with Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra was well-received in public and broadcast on WSKG radio in New York State, he was also invited to give a solo performance on WRTI Classical Radio in Philadelphia in August 2022.

Furthermore, Junwen has been frequently invited to participate in well-renowned music festivals such as Texas State International Piano Festival, Lunigiana International Music Festival, The Leon Fleshier Academy, Art of the Piano at CCM, Atlantic Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Orford Musique, and Philadelphia Young Pianists' Academy. He has worked with famous pedagogues and concert pianists including Piotr Paleczny, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Gary Graffman, Jerome Lowenthal, Ching-Yun Hu, Andre Laplante, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Vladimir Feltsman, Robert McDonald, Ursula Oppens, Jeremy Denk, and more.

Since the age of 12, Junwen had begun winning top honors in China, such as Gu Lang Yu National Piano Competition and KAWAI Asia Piano Competition. He continues this path as he began his studies in the United States, where he subsequently won prizes from New York International Piano Competition, The American Prize, Naftzger Young Artist Competition, Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, and Juliusz Zarębski International Music Competition (Poland); he also gathered first prizes of Crescendo International Music Competition, Nouvelles Etoiles International Music Competition (France), The Princeton Festival International Piano Competition, YMIC International Music Competition, and Philadelphia International Piano Competition. Aside from performing solo, Junwen is passionate about collaborating with young artists. He performed regularly with professional instrumentalists and singers near Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore County, Maryland. Most recently, Junwen and four current Peabody graduate string players formed a piano quintet under the guidance of Michael Kannen, the director of Peabody’s Chamber Music Program. The quintet was selected as the only chamber group from Peabody to perform at Carnegie Hall’s Master Class Series, and work with Ludwig Quandt, the principal cellist of Berliner Philharmoniker.

Junwen recently completed a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree at Penn State, where he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Piano and studied with Christopher Guzman. He earned his bachelor degree with a full scholarship at Ithaca College. And a master degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he served as an Associate Instructor in Piano.
