Mezzo-soprano 🎶 and makeup artist 💄 Artist-in-residence at the Atelier Lyrique of the Opéra de Montréal
Recognized for her “haunting, smoky tonality” and “a command of her lower and higher register that make for thrilling artistry” (Opera Canada), French-Canadian mezzo-soprano Justine Ledoux is featured on CBC’s 2025 list of 30 hot classical musicians under 30. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal and the 2025 recipient of the Choquette-Symcox Award.  Her upcoming performances include Pastuchyna (Jenůfa) at l’Opéra de Montréal, Mrs. Grose (The Turn of the Screw) with l’Atelier lyrique, and cover for Carmen at l’Opéra de Montréal. A laureate of the Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, she has recently performed at the Wartburg Castle Gala in Eisenach, Germany.
Justine recently made her role and company debut as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Brott Opera in Hamilton, where she received rave reviews. She also made her role debut as Serena Joy (The Handmaid’s Tale) at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Alumn of the McPhee Artist Development Program at Calgary Opera, her previous roles include Wellgunde (Das Rheingold), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Béatrice/Ursule (Béatrice et Bénédict), Mercédès (Carmen). At l’Opéra de Montréal, she has performed the Teacup and Dragonfly (L’Enfant et les sortilèges) and served as the cover for Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia. In December 2024, she was the alto soloist in the Brott Music Festival’s annual production of Handel’s Messiah.
Equally at home on both opera and concert stages, Justine premiered Stefan Hakenberg’s States of Matter in May 2024 alongside modern orchestrations of Mahler’s works, as part of a project initiated by the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies, with performances in Edmonton, Canmore, and Calgary. She has also performed as a featured soloist with the Chœur Massenet in Kim Arnesen’s Magnificat and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs.
Her notable achievements include two artist residencies at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where she made her role debut as Serena Joy (The Handmaid’s Tale), as well as Rachel in a workshop of Adoration by Mary Kouyoumdjian and Royce Vavrek, in collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects. In 2025, she won Third Place at the Prix d’Europe Competition, where she was awarded the Claire-Charbonneau Prize for her outstanding artistic and technical qualities. Past roles include the Stepmother in Philip Glass and Robert Moran’s The Juniper Tree and Dorothée in Massenet’s Cendrillon under the baton of Maestro Jacques Lacombe.
Justine continues to refine her craft under the mentorship of Lena Hellström-Färnlöf, artistic director of the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University (Sweden). She holds both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
