Biography

Kathryn Grumley

Soprano Kathryn Grumley was reviewed by the South Florida Classical Review as “dominating the stage, owning every scene from the rise of the curtain” following her performance as Magda in the 2018 Miami Music Festival production of Puccini’s La rondine. The same reviewer also noted she has “the hall-filling spinto voice to float Puccini’s phrases with ardor as well as subtlety…and sung with just the right touch of lifting enchantment.” The Grunion Gazette has noted her ability to sing “beautifully, and with impressive musicality.” The Austin Chronicle has written that “her voice possesses a rich, caramel quality that beautifully suits her character’s choices as she sings the role with elements of sadness, fear, and remorse.”

As the rapid spread of COVID-19 disrupted live performances and art programs around the world, Kathryn jumped into action to help.  In addition to her degree in Opera Performance, Kathryn is a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN).  Kathryn has been working the frontlines since 2020 as a hospital crisis ICU and ER nurse in Arizona, Austin and Houston, TX, as well as internationally in Aruba.  Austin Opera recognized the value of her unique skill set by selecting her to serve as their Certified Health Advisor from 2021-2022.

Most recently in April 2022, Kathryn made her international debut singing with OpernFest Prague as a Voice Fellow performing at the Divadlo na Vinohradech located in the Czech Republic.  In November 2021, Kathryn took the stage as Barbarina in Austin Opera’s rescheduled production of Le nozze di Figaro.  Her most recent roles prior to the pandemic include Mimì in St. George Opera Company’s production of Puccini’s La bohème and as the Soprano Soloist with the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Handel’s Messiah.

Other operatic highlights include: Soprano Soloist in Verdi’s Requiem; Magda in La rondine, Anna Sørensen (cover) in Silent Night; Annina in La traviata; Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly; the Nominee’s Wife in The Manchurian Candidate; Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro; Marzelline in Fidelio; and Sister Catherine in Dead Man Walking.
