Biography

Laura Fuentes

Laura Fuentes (she/her/hers) is a Baltimore-area librettist and playwright. Her one-act opera, The Pier Point Lobster Race (Sean Pflueger, composer), was commissioned by the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth for their 50th anniversary season in 2018 (“brilliantly funny”, The Cape Cod Times). Laura recently completed a 2019 Playwright Fellowship with Cohesion Theatre for the development of her play By Sea, which has since received a staged reading with Cohesion Theatre in Baltimore and Avant Bard Theatre in DC. In 2017, her short play, The Ides of May, was commissioned by Interrobang Theatre in Baltimore. Laura has also developed educational theatre works for young people through the Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre. As a librettist, she is a frequent collaborator of composer Sean Pflueger. Their full-length opera, Do Not Disturb, was praised for its “peppery wordplay” (DC Theatre Scene), and was a semi-finalist for The American Prize in 2017. Other collaborations include the art song cycle What’s for Dinner: A Guide to Managing Expectations, and Brides and Mothers, a one act opera which premiered in November 2019 at Montgomery College. Laura holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary, a Master of Music degree from Towson University, and a Master of Arts from Johns Hopkins University. By day, she is a fundraiser for Johns Hopkins University, where she specializes in proposal development and grant writing.
