Biography

Leila Lok

Leila Lok strives to express emotions for which words simply do not suffice through her passionate playing as a pianist and avid chamber musician. She is driven to share her music and knowledge about classical music to the future generation. As a participant at the 2019 Amalfi Coast Music Festival, she performed in various recitals and masterclasses with renowned professors. She also presented her debut solo recital at the Salt Spring Chamber Music Festival in 2018, in addition to performing the Canadian premiere of the Novak Piano Quintet with faculty members.

Leila is a keen chamber musician, having attended SSCMF for four years from 2015-2018, performing with faculty members for two of them. This opportunity greatly broadened her horizons on the experience of playing with professional musicians. She loves the creative process of sharing and creating new musical ideas with others as well as the inspiration that comes from hearing different musical perspectives. She has played in multiple chamber music formations, including performing concerts with vocalists, pianists and most often with string players. For two years, she also participated in chamber music at the Amici Stringfest.

In competition, Leila won third prize in the National Finals at the Canadian Music Competition in Vancouver in 2015. Additionally, she has represented Calgary twice at the Alberta Provincial Music Festival held in Canada, where she has won numerous first and second prizes. Having completed her ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance, she received the highest exam mark in Canada during the year of 2016 from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

While attending the Academy for Gifted Youth at Mount Royal University in her teenage years and participating in summer music festivals, Leila has had the privilege to perform for renowned artists such as Boris Berman, Akiko Ebi, Ian Jones, Dalton Baldwin, and Marc Durand.

Leila is currently pursuing her Graduate Performance Diploma in Piano Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studies with Alexander Shtarkman. She received her Master of Music also at Peabody and her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain, studying with Catherine Ordronneau.
