Elizabeth Lu first gained recognition at the young age of twelve, when she was featured as a “flute prodigy” on NBC Television. Shortly after, she made her debut as a soloist with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra after winning the Conductor’s Award in the NJSO Young Artist Competition. In the subsequent years, she won numerous competitions, including 2022 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition 2nd place and Best Performance of the Commissioned PIece, First Place - New Jersey Flute Society Competition, National Flute Association High School Competition, Ohio Music Competition, and top prizewinner in the NFA Orchestral Competition.

Ms. Lu had an early introduction to music, learning piano at the age of five from her grandmother. Hearing her father play the flute as a hobby influenced her to start playing the instrument when she was nine years old. She quickly developed a talent for it and soon thereafter, she was accepted into the Juilliard School Pre-College. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Music from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn Conservatory. Ms. Lu is greatly indebted to her teachers Jim Walker, Jeanne Baxtresser, Bradley Garner and her family for their unwavering support. Other influential flutists she has worked with include Alberto Almarza, Walter Auer, Julius Baker, Julian Beaudiment, Philippe Bernold, Robert Langevin, Mathieu Dufour, James Galway, Emmanuel Pahud, Elizabeth Rowe, and Carol Wincenc, among many others.

Following her graduate studies, Ms. Lu was accepted as a Fellow in the New World Symphony, where she performed a broad range of repertoire that encompassed prolific symphonies with Michael Tilson Thomas, monumental film works with John Williams, and even popular music in settings such as game shows and clubs. Since completing her fellowship in 2019, Lu joined the Miami City Ballet as Piccoloist, Symphony of Americas as Principal Flute, and Palm Beach Symphony as Associate Principal Flutist, Most recently she has played at the Van Cliburn International Competition with the Fort Worth Symphony that accumulated over 8.5 million YouTube views. She has also played with the Naples Philharmonic, Florida Grand Opera, Sinfonia Boca Raton, Orchestra Miami, amongst many others. She loves that in Miami, she gets opportunities to play different genres of music including EDM (electronic dance music) with KSHMR at ULTRA 2022 and with opera/pop fusion performer, Andrea Bocelli.

Ms. Lu’s vibrant music career has spanned the globe. She has performed in notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theater, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. She has been invited to international festivals such as Académie Musicale de Villecroze in France, Le Domaine Forget and Orford Music Festivals in Canada, and Vianden Chamber Music Festival in Luxembourg. She has been the recipient of fellowships at several acclaimed music festivals including Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Spoleto Festival USA, the National Repertory Orchestra, and National Festival Orchestra and Institute. Ms. Lu has played principal flute under the baton of esteemed conductors, such as Andris Nelsons, Michael Tilson Thomas, Marin Alsop, Stéphane Denève, Vladimir Jurowski, Sir Neville Marriner, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Leonard Slatkin. She has also shared a stage with distinguished musicians, including Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Yuja Wang, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Augustin Hadelich and Gil Shaham, among many others.

A passionate educator, Ms. Lu aims to not only nurture her students’ interest in music but develop flexible technique and a strong musical foundation. In addition to maintaining her private studio, she has been a Flute Teaching Artist of the Colburn School’s Jumpstart Program, Woodwind Teaching Artist with the All-Star Youth Orchestra, and has worked with underprivileged students in the Miami-Dade County through New World Symphony’s outreach programs. Recently, she was a guest on PBS Kids as part of their musical education program. She was also invited to judge the National Flute Association High School Soloist Competition in 2017, listening to over 70 recordings.

During her free time, Ms. Lu enjoys attending pilates classes, exploring the outdoors, arts and crafts, board games, spending time with family and friends, and pursuing her foodie interests, exploring culinary hot spots around the world.
