Tenor Lucas van Lierop performs on the stages of the Bayerische Staatsoper, Dutch National Opera, and the Salzburg Festival, working with conductors including Kirill Petrenko, Christian Thielemann, and Lorenzo Viotti.
Dutch-Canadian tenor Lucas van Lierop is fast establishing himself as a versatile and expressive performer across Europe’s leading opera and concert stages.
In the 2024/25 season, van Lierop made important house debuts at the Salzburg Festival in Capriccio as Diener 7 under Christian Thielemann, and at Theater Basel as Pong in Christoph Loy’s new production of Turandot. He returned to the Dutch National Opera as Bob Boles in Barbora Horáková’s new staging of Peter Grimes conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. A frequent guest at the house, he has appeared in numerous roles, including Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Spoletta (Tosca), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Joe Cannon (Girls of the Golden West), Ein Wirt (Der Rosenkavalier), and Der Schneider (Königskinder), among others. He originated the role of Man Ray in Willem Jeths’s Ritratto.
Other notable concert performances have included Elektra (Ein Junger Diener) with Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic, Hans Abrahamsen’s The Snow Queen (The Prince) with Kent Nagano, Bach Cantata 149 with Helmuth Rilling at the Stuttgart Bach Festival, and Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest under Markus Stenz. He has sung Handel’s Messiah with orchestras across the Netherlands and the U.S., and appeared in Johannes Helstone’s Het pand der goden with the Concertgebouw Orkest under Otto Tausk.
In the 2025/26 season, van Lierop will make his Bayerische Staatsoper debut as Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos and as the Second Nazarene in Salome. Other upcoming highlights include a performance of Bernstein hits at SAIL Amsterdam in August 2025 and a return to Dutch National Opera as Spoletta in Tosca. This season’s concert appearances include Garniero in Donizetti’s Dalinda with the NTR ZaterdagMatinee, and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings with Kammerakademie Potsdam.
Born in Canada and trained at McGill University, Yale University and the Dutch National Opera Studio under Rosemary Joshua, van Lierop continues to be recognized for his incisive musicianship, vivid characterizations, and commitment to a wide-ranging repertoire.
