Biography

Madeline Whitesell

Madeline Whitesell (She/Her) is a Brooklyn-based director and designer whose work deals with the intersections of music and theatre. Madeline likes to work with the very old and very new, aiming to derail the current conventions of opera and music-theatre. She is especially passionate about giving voice to new artists, and works with many young composers, librettists, and performers on cultivating their unique perspectives. She has developed work with The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The HERE Arts Center, The Tank, Opera on Tap-New York, Opera NEO, The ODC Ensemble, The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, and The Krannert Center for Performing Arts. Madeline began her work in opera and music-theatre as a soprano, performing at venues such as The Chicago Harris Theater, Alice Tully Hall-Lincoln Center, The Finger Lakes Opera, Opera NEO, Sinfonia Bel Canto, and Teatro Signorelli in Cortona, Italy. In 2017, she was awarded a career grant from the National Society of Arts and Letters. Currently, Madeline is directing Francis Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine at The Alchemical-Manhattan and developing theatrical albums and music videos with Chicago-based artists Uuskhy and Emily Blue.
