Building a reputation for her musicality, beauty of tone and interpretive skills, Mairi-Irene McCormack is an emerging classical mezzo-soprano based in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where she earned a Performer Diploma in Vocal Performance studying with Professor Timothy Noble. During her studies at IU, she performed the role of Mrs. Sedley in Indiana University Opera Theater’s production of Peter Grimes and performed excerpts as Charlotte in Werther, Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw in opera workshop performances. She was also a frequent performer with the opera outreach program Re-imagining Opera for Kids in their production of Lauren Bernofsky’s interactive opera Rufus and Rita. Previous to her training at IU, McCormack earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Augustana Faculty at the University of Alberta and received further training at Opera NUOVA and the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy. An avid performer of art song and lieder, McCormack is a 2012 graduate of the Franz Schubert Institut. She has received grants and awards from the Anne Burrows Music Foundation, the Winspear Fund, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Edmonton Arts Council, the Wirth Institute, and Jacobs School of Music. Since returning to Edmonton, McCormack has completed a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Alberta studying with tenor John Tessier. While at the university, McCormack performed the role of Aloes in L’etoile and Third Lady in The Magic Flute with the Opera Workshop Ensemble and worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Voice Area. She recently debuted as a soloist with the Richard Eaton Singers in the Western Canadian premiere of Allan Bevan’s Last Light Above the World, as well as Haydn’s Paukenmesse, and with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble as the alto soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria. In 2020, she joined Edmonton Opera’s Emerging Artists Studio where she will cover the role of Smeton in Anna Bolena and participate in various live and online performances throughout the season. McCormack is currently a sessional instructor of voice at the Concordia University of Edmonton and maintains a busy private teaching studio. She has previously taught as part of the voice faculty at the University of Alberta and has recently begun adjudicating, serving as the Voice and Classroom Music adjudicator at the Barrhead Rotary Music Festival in March 2020.
