Mezzo-Soprano, Maria De Conzo is known for her versatility with dramatic and comedic roles as a crossover artist in opera and musical theatre. Maria’s most recent engagement for the 2025 season was with Charlottesville Opera as an Ader Emerging Artist where she covered Mercédès in Carmen while also performing Kate and covering Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance.
Last year, Maria performed Dritte Dame in Die Zauberflöte with Nashville Opera and was excited to join Des Moines Metro Opera. As a 2024 Frank R. Brownell III Apprentice Artist, she covered Herodias in Salome and was given the opportunity to perform the role of Maddalena in Rigoletto as well as a featured actor in Pelleas et Melisande.
In the 2022-2023 season, Maria joined The Glimmerglass Festival covering Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette and made an appearance as one of the milkmaids in La boheme. She was also a 2022 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition District Winner for the Midwest Region. In addition, Maria was a Young Artist with Opera Saratoga where she performed Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, opposite Broadway’s three-time Tony nominee, Carolee Carmello, covered Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia and covered Danny in Sky on Swings.
As an Apprentice Artist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Maria performed in Carmen and The Shining (World Premiere Live Recording). Additional 2022 -2023 performance credits include: Charlotte in Werther, Elizabeth Cree in Elizabeth Cree, Miss Todd in The Old Maid and the Thief, Grandma Mills in The House without a Christmas Tree, and Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro.
During the 2019 to 2021 seasons, Maria was an Emerging Artist with Seagle Festival where she displayed her flexibility performing the roles of Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! She was scheduled to return in 2020 to perform Madame de la Haltière in Cendrillon and matchmaker, Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly!. Maria was fortunate to return in 2021 to perform Madame de la Haltière in Cendrillon, as well as cover Bellomy in The Fantasticks! and Theodorine in The Island of Tulipatan. Maria has also worked closely with On Site Opera where she covered the Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and Sadie Felderman in Morning Star.
Maria received her Artist Diploma with William Jewell College, MM in Vocal Performance with Mannes School of Music, and BM in Vocal Performance with Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music.
