Biography

Maria Novella Malfatti

During season 2021/22 she sang at the Lyric Opera Chicago as "Woglinde" in Das Rheingold of Wagner, as "third apparition" in Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by Enrique Mazzola and director Sir David McVicar and she was also covering the roles of Adina (Elisr d' Amore) and Pamina (The Magic Flute). Miss Malfatti will also sing at the Harris Theater Chicago in "Beyond the Arias" alongside the pianist Craig Terry, soprano Janai Brugger and tenor David Portillo. ​ In 2020, she debuted at The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam singing the role of Azema in Rossini’s Semiramide, conducted by Michele Mariotti and at the Dutch National Opera in Mahagonny of K. Weill with Markus Stenz conductor and Hivo van Hove's direction. ​ During the 2018-2019 season, she has performed at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl in Austria as Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème under the baton of Paolo Carignani and as the soprano soloist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Martin Sieghart; in Bach’s St. John Passion in Utrecht and Oosterhout conducted by Bernhard Touwen and Rick Muselaers; and in Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at the Festival d’ Aix-en-Provence under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchetra. Since 2017, Ms. Malfatti has performed regularly at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl under the baton of Gustav Kuhn, singing the roles of Tamiri in Mozart’s Il re pastore; Musetta in Puccini’s La bohème; Cleone in Rossini’s Ermione; Ein Junger Hirt in Wagner’s Tannhäuser; and as the soprano soloist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio. She debuted also as soprano solo in the Deutsch Requiem of Brahms, as Giulietta in Capuleti e Montecchi and as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro of Mozart at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam under the baton of Maestro Ed Spanjaard.  ​ In 2015, she recorded a duet from Verdi’s La traviata with Andrea Bocelli for Michael Radford’s “La Musica del Silenzio,”a biographical film about Mr. Bocelli’s life.  IMs. Malfatti is a district winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2021. In September 2018, she was a finalist in the 52nd International Vocal Competition of s’ Hertogenbosch, and in 2016, she was awarded Third Prize at the Ferruccio Tagliavini International Competition for Opera Singers in Deutschlandsberg, Austria.  Ms. Malfatti graduated with 'Full Marks Cum Laude' in Master Classical Voice from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the tutelage of Sasja Hunnego. Prior to her studies in Amsterdam, Ms. Malfatti studied voice with acclaimed sopranos Janet Perry and Raina Kabaivanska at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, Italy and with Don Marrazzo.  She also studied violin at the Conservatory "L. Boccherini" of Lucca with the Maestro Alberto Bologni.
