Biography

Maria Vasilevskaya

Siberian-born soprano, Maria Vasilevskaya, praised for her “sweet and clear tone” (Palm Beach Daily News) and “resilient performance” (City Paper), joins the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble in their 2024/2025 season as an Opera Foundation Scholarship recipient. This season with DOB, her roles will include: Erste Dame in “Die Zauberflöte”, Berta in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” Annina in “La Traviata”, Tebaldo in “Don Carlo”,  Das Echo der Rätselstimmung in “Antikrist”, Die Schleppträgerin in “Elektra”, Frantik and Grille und Eichelhäher in “Das schlaue Füchslein”, Lady in Waiting in “Rigoletto” and a cover role of Agata in Respighi’s “La Fiamma”.

Maria has completed her third year as a Resident Young Artist at Palm Beach Opera. Her highlight roles include Clotilde in “Norma”, Rosina in “The Barber of Seville”, Sylviane in “The Merry Widow”, the First Witch in “Dido and Aeneas”, and cover roles for the Four Heroines in “Les Contes d'Hoffmann”, Adina in “L’Elisir d'Amore”, and Belinda in “Dido and Aeneas”.

Her other roles include Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni” at the Eastman Opera Theatre. There, Maria also participated in the revival of Ricky Ian Gordon’s opera “The Tibetan Book of the Dead”, working with the composer himself.A 2020 and 2021 Des Moines Metro Opera Apprentice Artist, Maria joined the Aspen Music Festival in the summer of 2023 to cover the role of Roxanne Coss in Jimmy Lopez's “Bel Canto”. She returns to Aspen in the 2024 season to sing Ortlinde in Wagner’s “Die Walküre” season finale concert. There she will collaborate on a work by Matthew Aucoin and Peter Sellars, “Music for New Bodies.” Maria's concert repertoire includes Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”, Vivaldi's “Gloria”, Bizet’s “Carmen Suite”, Handel's “Messiah”, Mussorgsky's “Songs and Dances of Death”, Kurt Weill's “Die Sieben Todsünden” (Anna I), and Ginastera’s “Cantata para América Mágica”.

The 2023 Laffont Competition Tennessee District winner, Maria was named a Friends of Eastman Opera and Concerto Competitions winner while at the Eastman School of Music, where she earned her master's degree. She also holds a bachelor's degree with honors from the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory.
