Matthew Görlitz is an emerging Canadian operatic baritone recognized for his rich tone and commanding stage presence. He is currently pursuing his Master of Music in Opera Performance at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he also completed his Bachelor of Music under the mentorship of Dale Throness. Prior to UBC, he studied voice at Kwantlen Polytechnic University with Gale Suderman and Dale Throness.
This season, Matthew became a member of the professional vocal ensemble Musica Intima, appeared as the baritone soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Westend Chamber Choir, and performed in a newly composed opera (U29) with Opera Unbound. He also recently covered the roles of Escamillo in La Tragédie de Carmen and Lescaut in Massenet’s Manon.
At UBC Opera, Matthew has appeared in a wide range of roles, including Lescaut (cover) (Manon), Carl Olsen and Frank Murrant (cover) (Street Scene), Dick Deadeye (H.M.S. Pinafore), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte, in two productions), Le Roi (Cendrillon), Parson (The Cunning Little Vixen), Herr Reich (Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor), Vater (Father) (Hänsel und Gretel), and Antonio (The Gondoliers).
Matthew has also had the privilege of singing Guglielmo in the Czech Republic with conductor Nobert Baxa and director Krzysztof Biernacki
As a concert soloist, Matthew has been featured in Purcell’s Fairy Queen, Brahms Reqiuem, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s requiem.
He has additionally participated in a wide variety of productions with UBC Opera, including Il viaggio a Reims, Rusalka, Tosca, Le nozze di Figaro, Cavalleria Rusticana, and Il cappello di paglia di Firenze. His performance experience also includes concerts with world-renowned artists such as Javier Camarena and Sondra Radvanovsky.
Matthew has worked under the guidance of distinguished teachers, coaches, and conductors including Andrea Grant, Wen Wen Du, Nancy Hermiston, Leslie Dala, Jacques Lacombe, David Agler, and Tania Miller. His artistry is marked by versatility, musical sensitivity, and a commitment to bringing depth and nuance to every role he portrays.
