Internationally acclaimed tenor Matthew Vickers has been praised for his “brilliant and golden voice” (Die Kleine Zeitung), his “burnished sound and confident acting” (National Post), and hailed “a gutsy performer whose glowing tenor voice has interestingly dark, baritonal undertones (Opera Now). In the 2019-2020 season Mr. Vickers debuts the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca (Virginia Opera), reprises his Rodolfo in La Bohème (Dayton Opera), premieres with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Il Principe Dmitri in Alfano's Risurezzione, performs as the tenor soloist in Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Carmel Symphony), Sam Polk in Floyd's Susannah (Annapolis Opera), and debuts the role of Calaf in Puccini's Turandot in concert with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. The 2018-19 season saw Mr. Vickers perform the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly (Opera Memphis, Shreveport Opera, Virginia Opera), Don José in Bizet's Carmen with Arena di Macerata Sferisterio, where he also jumped in for the final performance of the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto, and performed the role of Canio in Pagliacci (Savannah Opera). In the 2017-18 season, Mr. Vickers appeared as Arnold in Rossini's Guillaume Tell (Baltimore Concert Opera / Opera Southwest), Edgardo in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor (Opera Western Reserve), Des Grieux in Puccini's Manon Lescaut (Sarasota Opera), Rodolfo in Puccini's La Boheme (Opera Roanoke), and Luigi in Puccini's Il Tabarro (Opera Delaware). In the 2016-17 season, Matthew covered Canio in Pagliacci (Virginia Opera), Don José in Bizet's Carmen (Opera Western Reserve), Avito in Montemezzi's L'amore dei tre re (Sarasota Opera) , Sam in Floyd's Susannah (Opera Roanoke), Luigi in Il Tabarro (Opera Company of Middlebury), and Duca in Verdi's Rigoletto (Charlottesville Opera). In the 2015-2016 season, Mr. Vickers made his Sarasota Opera debut as Arrigo in Verdi’s La Battaglia di Legnano, stepping in for an ailing colleague for 5 performances; took part in the east coast premiere of Faccio’s Amleto with Opera Delaware as Laertes, and performed the title role in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz with Boston Midsummer Opera. Oratorio engagements have included Mendelssohn's Elijah, Handel’s Messiah (Charleston Symphony, Johnstown Symphony, Lynchburg Choral Union), Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Johnstown Symphony), and Mozart’s Regina Coeli (Williamsport Symphony) and Requiem. Mr. Vickers is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Third Prize in the Annapolis Voice Competition in 2015; in 2014, he received the Encouragement Award in the D.C. Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (MONCA) and in 2013 he won the Philadelphia District of the MONCA. In 2012, he was awarded the Audience Favorite and Third Prize Awards at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) Meistersinger Concert in Graz, Austria. Mr. Vickers received his Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from Penn State University and his Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Performance from Lynchburg College.
