Biography

Melanie Athans

Melanie Athans is a 23 year old lyric soprano with roots in both Texas and California. She is in the midst of pursuing her Master of Music degree in voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of the esteemed César Ulloa. During her first year at SFCM, she collaborated with an all female cast and creative team to premiere Errollyn Wallen's chamber opera ANON to the West Coast, transforming into over 10 different characters in 19 vignettes under the character name "Girl 3". Additionally, Melanie sang the partial roles of Zweite Dame in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Lady With a Cake Box in Dominick Argento's Postcard From Morocco. This summer, Melanie sang the role of First Lady in Die Zauberflöte with Chicago Summer Opera under the baton of Maestro Curtis Serafin. In May of 2024, Melanie graduated summa cum laude from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. While at CSULB, Melanie sang the role of Rosalinde in Strauss' Die Fledermaus and performed Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the conservatory symphony as the 2024 Concerto Competition winner. Melanie is a recipient of numerous awards and grants from the 2025 Lotte Lenya Competition, The Opera Buffs, the Theodore Presser Foundation, and the South Coast Symphony.
