Mia Athey
(She/Her) Mia Athey, mezzo-soprano, is a multifaceted performer, telling stories through opera, musical theatre, film and writing. A Hyattsville native with a passion for new works, in 2022 Mia will make her Kennedy Center debut in Show Way marking her fifth world premiere work. Other premieres include: Blue, The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson, The Knock, and Edward Tulane Choral Suite. In spring 2022, Mia will sing Mercédès and cover Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen at Minnesota Opera.

Biography

Mia Athey

Mia Athey, mezzo-soprano, is a multifaceted performer, telling stories through opera, musical theatre, film and writing. A native of Hyattsville, MD, she’s been praised for her “plush mezzo” and “sincere delivery” by Opera Today. With a passion for new works, Show Way marks both Mia’s Kennedy Center debut and fifth world premiere work. Other world premieres include: Girlfriend 3/Congregant in Blue (opera) by Jeanine Tesori, Phoebe in The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson (play) by Sandra Seaton, and Aishah McNair in The Knock (film) by Aleksandra Vrebalov at The Glimmerglass Festival; and Ensemble in the Edward Tulane Choral Suite by Paola Prestini at Minnesota Opera. In Spring 2022, Mia will portray Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice at Opera NexGen, then return to Minnesota Opera in Bizet’s Carmen as Mercédès and Carmen (cover) for Denyce Graves’ directorial debut. Past operas/shows include: Flight, Elektra, and Show Boat.
