In this brand-new production, built by local artists in Lyric Opera’s scene shop, our Director, Michael Shell, along with Set Designer Steven C. Kemp and Costume Designer Amanda Seymour, amplifies this story’s playfulness with a sparkling Wes Anderson-inspired production.

Presented for the first time in Lyric Opera history, Porgy and Bess is the essential American opera. The source of some of the twentieth century's most beloved songs—including “Summertime”—this jazzy Gershwin score is unforgettable. The opera paints a vivid picture of life in the Charleston neighborhood Catfish Row, where a poignant “opposites attract” romance unfolds alongside a powerful portrait of a community that unites in the face of tragedy and triumph.

Description
The Sing Me A Story series continues with “Your Journey to the Stage,” an engaging program designed for students in grades 3-8, although impactful for high school students who are interested in the arts as well. This immersive Arts Education experience pulls back the curtain on opera, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the diverse roles and journeys that bring this vibrant art form to life.
From singers and orchestra members to stage designers and technical artists, students will discover the many unique paths that lead to the stage. Some performers began with classical training, while others found their passion later in life. Through live opera performances and interactive learning, students will explore the works of composers like Bizet and Mozart, alongside insights into musical theater.
The program highlights the personal stories of the performers and backstage team members, showcasing how creativity, commitment, and collaboration fuel every role in the world of theater. Students will leave with a deeper appreciation for the hard work and dedication it takes to succeed on stage—and inspiration to imagine their own creative journeys.

Biography
MiKayla Lynn Hatfield, a native of Van Buren, Arkansas, is currently a resident of Winchester, Virginia. Her degrees consist of a Bachelor of Music from Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, TN) and a Master of Music Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory (Winchester, VA). Some of Ms. Hatfield’s recent theatrical roles include Alice in Verdi’s Falstaff, Galatea in Händel's Acis & Galatea, Lidochka in Moscow, Cheryomushki, Eugénie in Germaine Tailleferre's La Pauvre Eugénie, Marie Antoinette in Shenandoah Conservatory's Gothic Opera, Suor Angelica in Suor Angelica, Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical: The Musical, and Father in Children of Eden.
In the summer of 2017, Ms. Hatfield had the opportunity to participate in Boston Conservatory’s Opera Intensive located in Valencia, Spain. In 2018 she toured with the Trevecca Nazarene University Singers through the United Kingdom and Ireland as a featured soloist. In the summer of 2022 She attended the prestigious American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria for 6 weeks. In summer of 2023 Ms. Hatfield was awarded the $20,000 Stephen Feinberg Scholarship with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. In the fall of 2023, she accepted a Post-Masters Teaching Assistantship from Shenandoah Conservatory, where she started her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal performance. In November of 2023, Ms. Hatfield placed 1st in the Shenandoah Conservatory Student Soloist Competition, Division II. Ms. Hatfield is a Resident Artist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City for the 2025-2026 season. She will perform mulitple roles with the company during her tenure, including Clorinda in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Querulous String in The Haberdasher Prince, and Strawberry Woman in Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess.
