Biography

Monique Arar

Learning to read music before words, Dr. Monique's comprehensive education began with the Russian School of piano playing. Her promising talent earned her various scholarships and awards to continue her musical studies, and under the tutelage of various distinguished international faculty, Dr. Monique earned her Bachelor (Miami University of Ohio), Master, and Doctoral degree degrees (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) in Piano Performance.

Dr. Monique's approach to pedagogy is both informed and thorough. Uniquely crafting each lesson to meet her students' needs, she provides a multifaceted and holistic approach to her teaching that incorporates theory, solfege, composition, dictation, and ensemble playing whenever possible.

With over twenty years of experience teaching students from pre-school age to retirees, beginners to advanced, Dr. Monique has successfully helped students pursue their passion and realize their musical dreams. She holds teaching certifications by the Music Teachers National Association and the Royal Conservatory of Music and has adjudicated music competitions and festivals throughout the country. Her students have earned the highest honors and regional recognition for their outstanding performances at festivals and competitions.

In addition to being an active solo pianist and chamber musician, Dr. Monique has dabbled in guitar and studied violin, harp, and early keyboard performance. An independent scholar, she has presented her research on early music and keyboard pedagogy at conferences hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, the Musicking Conference, the College Music Society, and The Historical Keyboard Society of North America.

Dr. Monique has served as a university collaborative pianist and instructor of Music Theory, Musicianship, and Private and Group Class Piano at Spelman College,  the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Clayton State University, and the University of North Georgia. Prior to running her studio full-time, Dr. Monique held a career as a non-profit executive, championing diversity and inclusion primarily within higher education.

Outside of music, Dr. Monique’s interests include world travel, spending time outdoors, enjoying the arts, health and fitness, cooking plant-based food, and foreign languages.
