Mukil Narayanan is an Indian-American pianist, arranger, composer, and conductor with a style that encompasses all four eras of classical music. Born and raised in the United States, Mukil started playing the piano at age 6. When Mukil was ten, Mukil began to learn under Jamie Del Priore D.M.A. In August of 2020, Mukil was selected among the top 4% of examinees to do a branch honors recital per the guidelines of MTAC's Certificate of Merit musical examination program. Since then, Mukil won state honors awards, and has played either at annual recitals or convention recitals. He has also received a 99% in repertoire for Level 8 in CAPMT Piano Examinations, and 93% for theory/ear-training with a perfect score on theory.
In addition, he was homeschooled at home from the 2nd grade onwards due to his passion in academic subjects; he also took part, at the same time, in dual enrollment West Valley College courses as part of high school where he graduated with top honors, all four intense levels of music theory and two levels of music history with top grades.
Mukil also practices violin-piano duets with a friend, Max Polosky, accompanying and arranging duets.
Mukil began composing and arranging at the age of fourteen. With over 50+ compositions, Mukil's compositions have been praised for being a unique feel to the stylistic approaches of classical music and are introspective, lyrical, and emotional, often tying the music to a specific visual cue or reference that resonates deep within human emotions.
In 2023, Mukil was one of seventy young musicians to be selected for the 2023 Lamont Summer Academy, held at the University of Denver, a two-week competitive and intensive summer music camp. There, Mukil’s composition “Hoffnung” for oboe, violin, cello, and piano was premiered there. It was remarked as very emotional and very nostalgic.
Following the camp, Mukil composed many pieces that many musician friends to him have commissioned works from him, for various ensembles, and duets/trios that have been praised for being beautiful, lyrical, and very visual. His works have been performed by current and former students from the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver at his own mere request, as well as at West Valley College, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Mukil was mentored by leading composers in high school itself such as Robert Sinclair (formerly Robert J. Cornejo) of West Valley College and Dr. Sean Friar, chair of composition at the University of Denver due to his extreme talent and proficiency in composing and music theory. In 2024, after completing high school (at the top of his class), he is currently doing his bachelor's degree in music composition (B.M. Composition) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, in San Francisco, CA where he studies with David Garner. As a freshman, he has composed a record 10+ works for various ensembles and he has been commissioned by his peers to write them pieces, which have been hailed as unique and intriguing.
As a conductor, he studies with Professor Jacques Desjardins at the Conservatory, but is largely self-taught. He has an ability to conduct any piece of classical music that he hears, and is immersed in. His conducting style has been hailed as expressive, much like the giants including Michael Tilson Thomas and Leonard Bernstein.
Outside of his musical journey, Mukil's interest lies in Sanskrit, history, and stamps.
