Biography

Nicole Barbeau

Nicole Barbeau is a mezzo-soprano from Dallas, Texas. Her singing career began around the age of 7 in her family living room with voice lessons from her mom. After experiencing the thrill of live performance and falling in love with the voice as an instrument, Nicole discovered a passion for singing. This led her to pursuing higher education in music and giving regular performances on and off campus. Although Nicole’s training is focused on classical repertoire, she has had training and performance experience in contemporary genres like rock, country, jazz, R&B, and soul. Nicole obtained a Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance in December of 2023, studying with Professor William Joyner.

During her time at UNT, Nicole has sung with various vocal ensembles on campus. Among them are University Singers, A Cappella Choir, and the baroque ensemble Vox Aquilae. Nicole has performed as a chorus member in two UNT opera productions: Smetana's The Bartered Bride, and Mozart's Le Nozze de Figaro, and led the hair and makeup team in several others. In May of 2022, Nicole gave a joint recital performing 25 minutes of music and a solo recital in October of 2023 featuring works by Verdi, Purcell, Brahms, Debussy, Heggie, and more. In November of 2023 Nicole competed in the 4th/5th year treble division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition and won 4th place. Off campus, Nicole enjoys collaborating with friends on original contemporary compositions and singing for local churches as a section leader and as a soloist.

Currently, Nicole is pursuing a Master's of Music Performance at the Jacob's School of Music at Indiana University studying with Jane Dutton, and expected to graduate in 2026. In the fall of 2024 she performed with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theater in the chorus of Puccini's Sour Angelica, the chorus of Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and as Maddalena in the quartet from Verdi's Rigoletto. In spring 2025 she performed the role of Mercédès in George Bizet's Carmen at IU and sang in the Jacobs choral ensemble NOTUS. Nicole is heavily involved in the choral department, having been invited to sing with Conductor's chorus, Concentus, various masterclasses, and other special opportunities.

In fall 2025, Nicole is looking forward to her debut as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro at IU, and attending the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria this summer.
