Originally from San Francisco, Mexican-American mezzo-soprano Olivia Cosío is a member of the International Opera Studio at the Salzburger Landestheater for the 2020-21 season. She will join the Opera Ensemble for the 2021-22 season, where roles include Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos, Harper in Angels in America, Dama di Lady Macbeth, as well as a repeat of Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte and Zibaldona in Alma Deutscher's Cinderella.
Ms. Cosío began her season with the Salzburger Landestheater singing Siébel in Gounod’s Faust, for which she garnered praise for her “bezaubernd leichten, wendigen Mezzo” [“enchantingly light, agile Mezzo”] by the Salzburger Nachrichten. Upcoming engagements at the Landestheater for the 2020-21 season include Zibaldona in Alma Deutscher’s Cinderella and Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte. For the 2021-22 season, Olivia will join the ensemble and begin the season with Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos and Harper in Eötvös' Angels in the America. In the 2019-20 season, Olivia made a role and house debut as Rosina in The Barber of Seville with Opera Columbus. Before the onset of COVID-19, Olivia was slated to be a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theater of St. Louis, where she would have performed Mercedes in "Carmen" and Ms. Kohl in the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s "Awakenings". Olivia was a mezzo-soprano fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center for the summers of 2018/19, where highlights include performing Bernstein's "A Quiet Place", for which the Wall Street Journal noted her as "a standout", and the premiere of both "Red Wind" by Sid Richardson and "In America" by Michael Gandolfi. She received her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School and her Bachelor of Music from The Oberlin Conservatory.
