Robert Künzli

Austrian tenor Robert Künzli was twice named as one of the ‘Singers of the Year’ in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This signal honour recognized his outstanding performances in Peter Grimes (title role), Fidelio (Florestan), From the House of the Dead (Luka Kuzmich) and Die Bassariden (Dionysos), performances heard at Staatsoper Hannover. Künzli debuted with the Netherlands Reisoper as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde in Enschede and Leiden and further  performances include Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Canio in Pagliacci at Staatsoper Hannover. In Canada, he was heard as Erik in Der fliegende Hollander for both the Canadian Opera Company and Pacific Opera Victoria. He appeared for the Grand Rapids Symphony in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 and for the Grant Park Festival in Chicago as the Evangelist in Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln. Kuknzli has sung Aegisth in Elektra for the BBC Proms in London and was on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera as cover artist for Walter In Die Meistersinger. His home theatre in Germany is the opera house in Hannover and he continues to appear there in the heroic roles of Wagner, including Siegfried (Siegfried and Götterdämmerung), Loge in Das Rheingold and the title role in Tannhäuser. Most recently his schedule for the Lower Saxon opera capitol called for performances in Die Gezeichneten by Franz Shreker, the title role in Tristan und Isolde, Erik in Der fliegende Holländer and Herodes in Salome. Further career highlights include Loge for Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Kalaf in Busoni’s Turandot with Teatro de la Maestranza, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 for the New York Philharmonic, the title role in Les contes d’Hoffmann for Komische Oper Berlin and Schubert’s Fierrabras at Carnegie Hall. Credits also include engagements with Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Savonlinna Festival, Opéra Bastille, New York City Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera. Additional repertoire includes Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, Alwa in Lulu, the title role in Lohengrin, and Fritz in Der ferne Klang. Mr. Künzli can be heard in the title role of the world premiere recording of Carl Goldmark’s Merlin, and he appears in DVD versions of Das Rheingold and Die Zauberflöte.
