Chinese mezzo-soprano Ruoxi Bian is an emerging voice in the operatic world, praised for her expressive musicality, warm vocal timbre, and dynamic stage presence. She recently earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance from Michigan State University, where she was named a winner of the MSU Honors Competition. She also holds a Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree from the Minzu University of China.
Ruoxi’s operatic experience spans a wide range of styles and roles. Full productions include Minskwoman (Flight), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Ramiro (La finta giardiniera), and Amastre (Serse). She has also brought to life iconic characters in staged scenes such as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the title role in Carmen, Mallika (Lakmé), and Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), among others, demonstrating remarkable versatility and depth across diverse mezzo repertoire styles.
Her artistry has been recognized with numerous awards. Ruoxi was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Idaho–Montana District), and received First Prize at both the San Jose International Music Festival Competition and the Singapore Zhongsin International Music Competition.
In the upcoming 2025–26 season, Ruoxi will appear with Opera Orlando performing multiple leading and supporting roles including Musetta (La Bohème), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), and Praskowia (The Merry Widow), and the anniversary concert A Decade of Divas, alongside other concerts and community engagements with the company.
Ruoxi Bian was honored with the MSU Dissertation Completion Award for her Chinese translation and adaptation of The Vaccai Project, a book by Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff. This book will be published in China and aims to provide Chinese singers with historically informed guidance, supporting the artistic growth of a new generation while bridging vocal traditions between East and West.
As she continues to grow her career, Ruoxi remains dedicated to telling vivid and diverse life stories through music and performance—whether portraying mischievous boys, expectant mothers, or captivating and complex women. With nuanced emotional insight and expressive depth, she breathes life into each role, forging a sincere and powerful connection with her audience.
