I started acting at the age of nine and directing at the age of nineteen. I've been a singer all my life as well. I received my BA in Theater from Smith College in 2016 and currently work as an actor/director in Milwaukee, WI. I am planning to apply to film school next year - wish me luck!
When I began acting, I was all about musical theater - my first role ever was as a singing nun in The Sound of Music! I was subsequently in A Chorus Line, Grease (twice) and The Fiddler on the Roof, all within about two years. At 13, I finally agreed to try a non-musical play: Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was incredible, and I was hooked. My career as an actor since then has been focused on half musical theater, half Shakespeare. I love the heightened emotions that both of these genres play in, and the poetry of musicals' songs and of Shakespeare's verse.
During college, I took a directing course. I realized that I had so many ideas about how I wanted to see plays performed; directing, therefore, seemed a natural progression of my interests. That summer I directed my first full-length play, Richard III, with a group of friends, ages 10-18. It was quite successful, and over the next few years I continued to direct with this same group, known as Upstart Crows Producitons. My final year at Smith I directed Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale for the university. At the same time, I was taking a course in film production. This was my introdcution to film, and it truly blew me away how much I enjoyed the coursework. So much so that the idea of making films remained stuck, like a burr, in my mind.
College ended, and I went home. I spent a couple of summers at different acting programs, and finally moved to Minneapolis in the fall of 2018. Around this time, my thoughts of film school became more serious. I decided to apply, and to prepare I enrolled in a filmmaking course at the University of Minnesota. I learned some of the basics of shooting and film editing, and became even more convinced of my new direction. Unfortunately, COVID hit. My day jobs ended not long after the class, and I moved back home to Madison to wait out quarantine with my parents.
When the worled opened back up I began directing again. I founded my own theatrical production company, Whirligig Productions, which performed its first show in August 2021. Not long after this, I moved to Milwaukee, and have been living and working here ever since. Now I am preparing to apply to film school. I must write papers and statements and create films for my portfolio. It is a very exciting time!
