Biography

Samuel Schlievert

Samuel Schlievert is an American tenor with an Italianate sound and style. From Genoa, Ohio, Schlievert first fell in love with opera as a young man studying music in Columbus at the Capital University Conservatory of Music. His first leading role was Rodolfo in La bohème, where he “shined with straight-forward style.” He then continued his studies with tenor Jeffrey Picón in Oklahoma City. There, he furthered his career by making leading debuts in La Gioconda, La rondine and La traviata, the latter praised for “excelling in every category.” A new addition to the roster at Sarasota Opera, Schlievert immediately showed his worth by being awarded the Stuart R. Silver Award in 2018. He had a successful 2019 Festival Season with Sarasota Opera, where his role in Nabucco was lauded by Brooklyn Discovery, claiming him as an “artist rising like the sun to a bright future.” In the 2020 Winter Festival Season, Schlievert debuted as the hot-headed swordsman Tybalt in Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet. Schlievert also fulfilled understudy duties for the demanding tenor lead Giuseppe Hagenbach in Alfredo Catalani’s masterpiece, La Wally. His efforts were rewarded not only in the press, but by the company announcing him as the Mandelker Award winner. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Schlievert was able to collaborate virtually with Dayton Opera in their Postcards from Dayton streaming series, as well as virtually and in person with Sarasota Opera in their Fall Concerts. He was well received by the audiences, with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune saying “Schlievert has a sure-footed and pleasing dramatic voice which can also wield a dramatic punch.”
