Shawn Fang
Shawn Xiangyu Fang was born in Shenzhen, China. He is currently studying at Indiana University Jacobs school of music, studying with provost professor Daniel Perantoni. Shawn started studying tuba with He Liu, Principal tuba of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, at age of 10. Before he came to States, he traveled and performed numerous concerts in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Dalian, and Australia.

Biography

Shawn Fang

Shawn went to Walnut Hill School For the Arts and New England Conservatory of Music preparatory school, studied with Kenneth Amis from Empire Brass. He was the recipient of Tan’s Family Scholarship and Brass Department Award at WHS and NEC prep. He was also the principal tuba of NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Youth Brass Ensemble, and Honors Brass Quintet. Shawn attended numerous renowned music festivals, including Boston Tanglewood Institute, Philadelphia International Music Festival, Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, Bremen International Brass Camp, Asia Tuba-Euphonium Festival, Pokorny Low Brass Seminar. Shawn was the principal tuba of the National Youth Orchestra of China in 2019 under the direction of Ludovic Morlot, and Shenzhen Futian Orchestra. He was also invited to perform at the closing ceremony of China Symphony Summit with Suzhou Symphony Orchestra. Shawn is the president of Chinese Music Association at Indiana University. He is also the founder of Jhao-yin Academy(朝音学院), which is the most prominent non-profit music student organization in China. Jhao-yin Academy published hundreds of music articles and collaborated with many top music schools such as NUS, The Juilliard School, Yale University, Curtis Institute of Music, NEC, JHU, and many other schools closely. Jhao-yin Academy organized more than fifty concerts, lectures, and masterclasses held in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Qinhuangdao, and Chengdu, with more than 6,000 people participating. The first Jhao-yin Shenzhen Youth Music Festival was held in Shenzhen from July 12th to July 20th, 2021. Prof. Han Xiaoming, the first general manager of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Tao Ran, president of the Shenzhen Wind Music Association, and others congratulated and highly appreciated the festival.
