Biography

Sua Lee

23-years old Korean pianist Sua Lee made her concerto debut in 2013 with the Kyiv Soloists at Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine; the latest concerto engagements include a performance with the Jenaer Philharmonie at Weimarhalle and with University Philharmonia Orchestra at Hill Auditorium as winner of 2021 SMTD Undergraduate Concerto Competition (University of Michigan). As the winner of other competitions, Lee performed at Sheremetev Palace (White Nights Piano Festival, Saint Petersburg) and Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center (Sixth Rosalyn Tureck Bach Competition). In the 2022 Gilmore Piano Festival, Lee performed as a Fellow, receiving masterclass instructions from Paul Schenly and George Li. Lee also played at masterclasses by Konstantin Scherbakov, Boris Berman, Michel Dalberto, Gábor Eckhardt, and Lev Natochenny. As Lee envisions sharing the joy and consolation of music with everyone, her performance venues extend to Interlochen Public Radio Station, Redeemer Church Traverse City, University of Michigan Hospital, Brookhaven Senior Living, Marie-Seebach Stiftung, and so on.

Lee’s interest in Mozart and Beethoven led to her regular consultations with musicologist Steven Whiting and masterclass engagements with Robert Levin. With the acquired knowledge she gave historically-informed performances of Mozart sonatas and concerti.

An active collaborative pianist who received private instruction from Martin Katz, Lee was a collaborative pianist in the 2021 Center Stage String Institute and vocal chamber music courses at the University of Michigan.

A church pianist since her middle-school years, Lee believes playing music also as an expression of her faith. In 2016, she collaborated with violinist Lishan Wu and released an album of contemporary Christian hymnal arrangements.

Lee is a 2022 graduate with Highest Honours at the University of Michigan, where she also pursued a minor in German Studies. Having studied with Helen Sim, Thomas Lymentsull, and Christopher Harding, in 2023 Lee began her master’s studies with Christian Wilm Müller at Hochschule für Musik Weimar as a fully-funded DAAD scholarship recipient. Speaking four languages and having translated for present-day composer biographies and in masterclasses, Lee seeks to promote music and musicians in various ways.
