Biography

Tarre Nelson

Tarre Nelson is a hornist and pedagogue based in Tallahassee, Florida. They are currently pursuing a Doctor of Music (DM) from Florida State University (FSU), where they are also a graduate assistant. They have performed throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Dominican Republic.

Tarre serves as the principal horn of the Panama City Symphony Orchestra (PCSO), and frequently substitutes with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. They have previously worked with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBCSSO), the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), and Ensemble Dal Niente

Tarre avidly supports chamber music, which led them to found the Fountain Five Wind Quintet (F5) during their time at FSU. F5 performs throughout the Florida panhandle and south Georgia, collaborating with Sinfonia Gulf Coast, PCSO, and the South Georgia Ballet. In 2023, the F5 were named finalists in the Music International Grand Prix competition in New York City.

In addition to chamber music, Tarre also frequently performs contemporary music. They have worked with prestigious composers such as Seung-Won Oh and Ronald Caltabiano to premier solo, chamber, and orchestral pieces. Tarre has also commissioned composers such as Hannah Barnes and Tyler Taylor to write chamber works featuring the horn.

Tarre serves as a judge for the Florida Music Education Association All-State competition and the Thomasville Performing Arts Concert and Scholarship. They are the brass coach for the Tallahassee Youth Orchestra, and they frequently work with local K-12 schools as a guest lecturer.

Tarre’s primary instructors include Jim Smelser, Steph Jones, Beccy Goldberg, and Michelle Stebleton. They have performed in master classes with renowned players such as Fritz Foss, Stefan Dohr, and Julie Landsman. They hold a Bachelor of Music (BM) from DePaul University and a Master of Music (MM) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
