Los Angeles-based oboist and composer Thacher Schreiber is a graduate student at the Mannes School of Music, where he studies the oboe with Professor Ryan Roberts. He has played music for more than sixteen years, starting with piano lessons at the age of eight.
Thacher joined his middle school band program and picked up the oboe, beginning private studies with USC and UCLA alumna Andrea Vancura soon after. After that point, his interest and love for music flourished; while attending Palisades Charter High School, he performed with all manner of ensembles large and small, adding clarinet bassoon, saxophone, and percussion to his repertory of skills, and developing an interest in conducting and composition. Thacher also played in several SCSBOA and Colburn School honor bands, and appeared as soloist with the PCHS Symphony Orchestra and Palisades Symphony.
He began his undergraduate studies at California State University, Northridge, studying oboe with Professor Kimaree Gilad and playing in CSUN’s chamber groups, opera orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony, with which he appeared as a soloist in the fall of 2019. Thacher transferred to UCLA in the fall of 2020, beginning studies with Dr. Jonathan Davis and other UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music faculty, as well as performing in numerous chamber ensembles and the UCLA Philharmonia and Wind Ensemble, as well as giving three solo recitals. It was here also that he founded the Fivemind Reed Quintet along with saxophonist Alex Lee, bassoonist Matthew Rasmussen, and clarinetists Kristine Llanderal and Darren Liou.
After completing his bachelor’s degree at UCLA, Thacher began his graduate studies at the Mannes School of Music, where he remains dedicated to the performance of contemporary and chamber music.
Beyond his studies with Dr. Davis and Professors Gilad and Roberts, he has attended and participated in master classes hosted by Nicholas Daniel, Elaine Douvas, Carolyn Hove, Eugene Izotov, Juliana Koch, Cynthia Toledo DeAlmeida, Marion Kuszyk, Laura Schaefer, Sarah Skuster, and Nicholas Stovall, all prominent oboists and music educators. Thacher still maintains an interest in conducting and composition, and has attended multiple symposiums and taken several classes and private lessons for both composition and conducting.
