Nathalie Doucet

Celebrating close to three decades of international excellence
Since 1997, Nathalie Doucet has built a dynamic career as a répétiteur, vocal coach, and collaborative pianist, working with some of the world’s most prestigious artists, producing organizations, and educational institutions.

As a versatile artist, Ms. Doucet has collaborated with premier organizations such as The Dutch National Opera, the Nederlandse Reisopera, the Canadian Opera Company, and the Opéra de Montréal. Her artistry has graced iconic venues including Het Concertgebouw and the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.

Shaping the future of opera
Since October 2021, Ms. Doucet has served as Detroit Opera’s Head of Music and Director of the Resident Artist Program, where she leads efforts to shape the next generation of operatic talent. Under her direction, the Resident Artist Program has become a cornerstone of Detroit Opera’s mission, enriching the company’s artistic output and forging meaningful connections with the local community. Through innovative training, mentorship, and community engagement, the program not only prepares artists for the professional opera stage but also brings opera to diverse audiences in Detroit.

Her leadership has been pivotal in Detroit Opera’s acclaimed productions, including the world premiere of Anthony Davis’ X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X. The updated Resident Artist Program, launched in September 2022, reflects Ms. Doucet’s commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement, ensuring opera remains a vibrant and relevant art form.

An esteemed educator and coach
Ms. Doucet’s career as an educator spans institutions like the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she shaped the next generation of opera performers for a decade. Her expertise extends across opera training, French lyric diction, and collaborative artistry, with teaching positions at Opera Orlando, the Dutch National Opera Academy, and Des Moines Metro Opera, among others. She has also contributed to international training programs like AIMS in Graz, COSI in Italy, and Musiktheater Bavaria.

A sought-after specialist in French Lyric Diction
Skilled in five languages, Ms. Doucet has cultivated a niche as a French diction coach, helping singers refine their artistry and master the nuances of French opera and art song. Her expertise draws students and organizations worldwide.

A career of competition and mentorship
As a judge for international vocal competitions such as the Metropolitan Opera National Laffont Competition, Meistersinger Competition in Graz, the John Alexander Vocal competition, COSA Canada National auditions, Ms. Doucet has also served as official pianist for competitions such as the Neue Stimmen Competition, the Belvedere Competition, and the International Vocal Competition ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Academic and artistic foundations
A native of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, Ms. Doucet holds degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from l’Université de Moncton and l’Université de Montréal. Her artistry was refined through mentorship with the late Dixie Ross-Neill and an Artist Diploma under the late Claude Savard.

Whether preparing singers for the world’s stages or shaping the next generation of artists, Nathalie Doucet continues to leave an indelible mark on the opera and classical music world.
