Biography

Wick Simmons

Wick's productions have been profiled by Second Inversion: rethink classical,, and premiered by the Tisch Dance Works series at NYU, in Access Theater and Spectrum NYC. Initially trained in classical cello, he is a winner of numerous competitions including the 2019 Anthony Quinn Foundation Fellowship, the 2017 Thaviu Competition for Strings, and the 2016 Yamaha Young Performing Artists competition. He has held residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity and the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival. As a soloist he has been presented by The Italian Academy, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater for “An Evening with Lin-Manuel Miranda,” NPR’s From The Top, and with the Georgia Philharmonic. He has performed with Raquel Klein for International Contemporary Ensemble’s “OpenICE” series, Shattered Glass, Laurie Anderson, The American Contemporary Music Ensemble, and with members of The Silkroad Ensemble and Bang on a Can All Stars. Wick has worked closely with composers including Andrea Liberovici, Chinary Ung, Julia Wolfe, Louis Andriessen, and countless others of his generation. In 2019, his performance of Chinary Ung’s “Khse Buon for Solo Cello”was featured as the soundtrack for journalist Ken Kurson’s upcoming documentary, “Holidays in Cambodia,” a film about refugees of the Cambodian genocide.
