Xinyuan Deng is a composer, pianist, sound artist, and educator originally from Henan, China and currently based in California, US. Her work uniquely bridges traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary sonic textures, delving into themes of memory, movement, and stillness. Through layered, immersive soundscapes, Deng invites listeners to rediscover the familiar in unexpected and evocative ways.
Her versatile output spans acoustic, electroacoustic, and multimedia formats, performed internationally by esteemed ensembles such as PHACE Contemporary Ensemble, The Rhythm Method String Quartet, ENSEMBLE CONCEPT/21, Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, and Harbin Symphony Orchestra. Among her notable compositions are Huai Xu, premiered by PHACE; The Rhyme of Yu Opera, recipient of an award at the 12th Yanhuang Cup; and Magic of Snow, featured at the Second International Music Competition in Harbin.
Recent career highlights include the premiere of BAN-NA at the National Orchestral Institute + Festival and Roaming Blooms, a collaborative work exploring globalization through the fusion of Chinese and Western instruments. Deng’s electronic music has been presented at prominent festivals such as Electronic Music Midwest (EMM), SEAMUS, and Click Fest. Her multimedia work Whispers in Motion was honored with the 2025 Morris and Sheila Hass Award in Computer Music.
Deng holds degrees from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she is currently pursuing her Doctor of Music degree.
