Biography

Yantian Sun

Baritone Yantian Sun is a rising operatic talent whose performances have been praised for their rich tone, dramatic presence, and musical sensitivity. He is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at Rutgers University, having previously earned a Master of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Musicology from Shandong University.

Sun has studied under distinguished teachers and coaches including Eduardo Chama, Neil Shicoff, Manny Perez, Diana Soviero, Michael Paul, Luis Salmeno, and Craig Rutenberg, which has shaped his artistry with both technical refinement and interpretive depth.

On stage, Sun has brought to life an impressive range of roles. Recent and upcoming highlights include Escamillo in Carmen (New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, 2025), Silvio in Pagliacci (Mason Gross Nicholas Hall, 2025), and Dr. Pangloss/Cacambo/Martin in Bernstein’s Candide (New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, 2024). Earlier engagements include Marcello in La Bohème, Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Don Giovanni, Papageno, and Rigoletto, among others. He has also appeared as soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

In competition, Sun has quickly distinguished himself on the international stage. He was named the Utah District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (2024), a Finalist in Opera at Florham’s International Vocal Competition (2025), and earned 3rd Prize in the same competition (2025). His earlier achievements include multiple First Prizes in national youth vocal competitions in China.

With a growing reputation for both vocal power and dramatic nuance, Yantian Sun continues to establish himself as an exciting baritone to watch on the operatic stage.
