Yulin Wang Biography

Yulin was born in 2000 in Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China. When Yulin was a child, his parents discovered his talent of singing and music. After Yulin began his first vocal lesson, he fell in love with vocal art, especially opera art, and spent almost all of his free time enjoying the recordings and opera productions of the great singers in opera history.

 

Yulin is one of Lehrer Vocal Institute fellows in 2025 Music Academy of the West as Ottavio cover. He likes this role to let him explore more calm and rational behavior. Yulin debuted this role at the Estate Theatre in Národni divadlo(Czech State Opera), which the place of world premiere of this opera, it was conducted by the composer Mozart himself in 1787. He will perform this role again in Opera in Concert of MAW in this mid-July.

 

In addition, he has a lot of fun things to do in MAW this summer: singing Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly by G.Puccini in the opera scenes concert, he debuted this role for Amore Opera Company in New York City. And Anatol in Vanessa by S.Barber; Dr. Cajus in Falstaff by G. Verdi; Louis in The Hours by Kevin Puts, which is also the first time that the part of this opera has been publicly performed outside of Met Opera after the world premiere in Metropolitan Opera.

 

Yulin used to study in a fully academic high school, so he could only use his free time to study music. His rational thinking has played a significant role in learning music, and he has also made rapid progress in learning. He began to study major in Opera Acting in Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, China, in 2018, and got his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2023. During this period, he sang his first complete opera role when he was 21 years old, which is Rodolfo in La Bohème by Puccini. And then he sang Alfredo Germont in La Traviata by G.Verdi for his graduation opera production. He also studied role of Duca di Mantua in Rigoletto by G.Verdi. In addition, he also sang opera scenes, such as: Nemorino in L'Elisir d'amore by G. Donizetti, Raimendado in Carmen by G.Bizet; and recitals like F. Schubert's Song cycle "Die Schöne Müllerin", recitals with the theme of Francesco Tosti’s art songs. He was working for iSING! Festival as a Young Artist in 2021! Suzhou Festival and won a full scholarship.

 

Later, in order to pursue a purer study of opera art, Yulin came to the United States from China. He began to study at Manhattan School of Music in 2023 and obtained his Master of Music Degree in May 2025. During this period, Yulin has appeared in opera productions: Romeo in Romeo et Juliet by C. Gounod, which was under guidance of Met Opera Maestro Pierre Vallet and Director Katherine Carter; Covering Ruggero in La Rondine by G.Puccini; Il Podestà in La Finta Giardiniera by W.A.Mozart, and Pinkerton, Don Ottavio mentioned above. Opera scenes include: Faust in Faust by C.Gounod; Rodolfo in La bohème by G.Puccini; Don Jose in Carmen by G.Bizet. Yulin worked with Maestro Kenneth Merrill in his last semester of MSM and Yulin did Master Graduation Recital with him. Yulin has performed many concerts in New York City. It is worth mentioning that Yulin shared stage with opera stars Nadine Sierra and Seokjong Baek in concert “A New Generation in Opera”in Merkin hall in NYC. In addition to operas and concerts, Yulin has also participated in drama performances many times, the important one which is that he did a main role in drama White Snake at the National Center of Performing Arts in Beijing China.

 

Love is Yulin's eternal theme, and it is also the source of his passion and energy on this road. He loves listening to music, loves performing arts, and loves singing. These three finally pointed him to the path of opera singer. Yulin’s parents always give strong support to him and Yulin met many people who love opera on this road, especially his girlfriend Ruijia Dong, who has been with him for five years, also is a wonderful Mezzo Soprano singer. He also met many people who were willing to help him sincerely, these people include teachers and seniors, and they all believe that Yulin's talent will continue to flourish in the future. Yulin is grateful to all these people, and he is even more grateful and cherishes his love for opera.
