Biography

Yumi Oshima

Yumi Oshima, a New York City native, was one of the youngest violinists admitted to the Juilliard Pre-College Division at age 7. Yumi earned her bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from MIT with a minor in music composition, as a student of John Harbison. Yumi continued her studies with Chen Yi at UMKC (Kansas City).  She earned her master’s degree in viola performance from Rutgers University, studying with Paul Neubauer.

Yumi has performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Radio City, where she won the viola chair three times.  Yumi is a tenured member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and also performs with NY area orchestras such as Albany and Harrisburg Symphony.  Some of her recent highlights include playing violin on PJ Morton’s Grammy-award-winning studio album, “Gumbo,” performing violin in the orchestra for the Emmy-winning live NBC production of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and performing viola in the premiere of Ellen Reid’s 2019 Pulitzer-prize-winning opera Prism.
